A Case for Web Development Standards

I’m proposing a case for Web Development Standards in project procurement. I’m noticing a glaring mistrust by clients in the consulting business due to having been burnt previously. I believe that much of this may be due to this industry not having standards and a ‘truth in capabilities’ requirement.

I’m seeing issues where designers have taken projects requiring advanced programming and planning which they were not able to handle in the end. It would be akin to hiring an interior designer to build your house. It looks to me like too many times a designers portfolio may help them land projects in which the eventual scope of the project overwhelms them, leading to a breakdown in the project and a client left with a Web site unfinished and a keen mistrust of any person bidding projects going forward.

This post may eventually end up being something I work on more, but at the moment, I wanted to get down this thought of mine. That just like there are associations for Law and Medicine with very well known and accepted levels of expertise, the same needs to be done in the Web development and engineering community.
