If you are changing domains because of a re-brand or for some reason aggregating content, you’ll need to make sure that the change is done flawlessly. Since Google is basically the end all and be all of search, I’ve consulted their resources. There are two basic links to review:

Google Webmaster Central – Moving Your Site

Google Webmaster Central Blog – Best Practices When Moving Your Site

The two links above are basically duplicate content (bad Google), but sometimes it helps to see things explained a couple different ways. The basic steps to take care of can be summed up as:

Setup a Google Webmaster Tools Account and Add New Site

Place .htaccess with 301 Permantent Redirects on old domain

Check your database and files for old domain mentions

Submit Sitemap and a Google Change of Address notification

Let her rip and monitor logs

I’ve done this exercise twice now with (on the same domain no less) with no noticeable decline in search engine link positioning. I’m sure I’ll be doing this again sometime, so that’s the reason for the blog post. It’s basically for self reference for the next time I inevitably have to move a Web site to a new domain.

It took me about 3 days for Google to index a relatively new domain (21 days old).

Notes:

Bing does not provide a Change of Address notification for their Bing Webmaster Tools

Then, on March 09 we became #1 on the result for Red Bridge Internet… Put in the request to move March 01

Congratulations, you have just backed up your Mozilla Thunderbird email on Windows 7. You can now take this zipped file of your Thunderbird email and safely store. Please remember to remove the ZIP file from the Profiles directory.

If there was ever a time that you need to revert or pull this archive back into your profile, you’ll just need to take the files (ONLY the files) within your *.profile and set those in a new *.profile folder that would be created after a fresh Mozilla Thunderbird install.

There’s a number of forum posts on the internet, most on Android forums discussing it, but I saw a hell of a lot of noise. There were just too many differing “solutions” which seemed not to match my exact issue.

I eventually found my way to the Grooveshark forums:

Instructions to get Grooveshark App working on your HTC Evo

HTC Unknown Media Player Issue

There’s another post on the Grooveshark Blog which explains the issue as well:

Grooveshark’s EVOlution

Well, to make a long story short I started out by calling Sprint customer service to retrieve my MSL as suggested in the first forum post. However, what eventually ended up happening is that they just sent a Streaming Reset to my device. That actually took care of the issue (as of this writing) and now my Grooveshark streaming issue on my Sprint HTC Evo seems to have been fixed.

Ok, I know there are man pages, I know there are hundreds of posts on the internet explaining linux user groups, and I know there are posts everywhere explaining how to add users to groups in Linux. However, every single time I need a quick reference, I just can’t seem to find a good clean one. I see forums, I see a bunch of competing information, more than anything I see noise.

So, that’s why I’m writing my own post on how to add users to groups in Linux. We’ll be using the user tommy in these examples:

New Users useradd

# Add user to supplementary group
$ useradd -G groupname tommy

# Add user to multiple groups
$ useradd -G groupname,groupname2 tommy

# Add user to primary group
$ useradd -g groupname tommy

Existing Users usermod

# Add user to supplementary groups
$ usermod -a -G groupname tommy

# Assign new primary group to user
$ usermod -g groupname tommy

Show Groups id

# Check the user group membership
# Shows tommy is member of groupname (primary), and group2 (supplementary)
$ id tommy
uid=500(tommy) gid=500(tommy) groups=500(groupname),400(groupname2)

# Bonus: Remove tommy from groupname2
$ gpasswd -d tommy groupname2

Now, this is lifted verbatim from the post here:

http://www.go2linux.org/change-add-user-to-group

This is another post I’ve used:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-add-user-to-group/

Here’s some other simple writeups:

http://www.planetmy.com/blog/how-to-add-linux-user-to-group/

I’m trying to give attribution here, but I just want to get this mirrored for my own use, because over the years I’ve seen good sites and good information just vanish.

So, to wrap this up. These are my instructions for adding users to groups in Linux.

Incoming search terms:

users and groups in linux

how to create users and groups in linux

how to add multiple users to a group in linux

how to create multiple users in linux

Creating users and groups in linux

add user to group linux

move user to group linux

how to move a user into a group in linux

how to move a user to a group in linux

how to add primary group in linux

There are many out there who believe Google Analytics does not provide hourly reporting in their traffic reports. The main question is if Google Analytics provides hourly statistics or traffic reports broken down by hour for a particular day.

With the help of an existing post from Get Satisfaction titled, “In Google Analytics is there any way to view traffic by time-of-day?“, I can show a Google Analytics view that provides an hourly report for your visits by the day.

The post I referenced provides a screen shot of the Analytics screen under Visitor Trending and Time On Site in which there is a link set titled View By: Daily | Hourly. This is no longer in the Google Analytics UI as mentioned by a commenter in that same post.

The best method to view visitors by hour with Google Analytics is to do the following:

=> select Visitors
=> select Vistor Trending
=> select Visits
=> select Clock/Hourly icon (to the right under the date selection option)

Here is a screen-shot showing visits broken down by hour for May 14:

If your report covers multiple days the hourly report will show the total amount of visitors per day for the date range. If the date range covers only one day the report will show visitors per hour for that particular day.

That’s it. That is how you can view visits and traffic by hour using Google Analytics.

I’ve got a site on the Ning Network and started getting killed by spammers one day. I wanted to make sure that I was able to approve any new members. What the spammers were doing was just signing up with descriptive member names (ie. buy viagra today) and then immediately posting their junk.

This isn’t rocket science, but for some reason I found it to be a royal pain in the ass to find any Ning documentation on how to force new member approval on a Ning site.

Well, figured it out and here it is:

login as Administrator

select Manage

select Privacy

select Approve new members before they join

That’s it. That’s how you choose to approve new members/accounts on your Ning Network site.

I needed to create a Magento Staging Area for both common development tasks and testing the latest upgrades.

In order to create the staging area for my Magento store I’m going to create a mirror of it at a subdomain. I host on my own Linux server and use Godaddy to manage my domains.

My main Web site will be referred to as www.domain.com. I’ll be creating the Magento development site at dev.domain.com. Below is a step by step documentation of the steps taken to create my Magento staging area using virtual host.

Create CNAME Record:

=> login to Godaddy
=> select Domains : My Domains
=> select your domain (domain.com)
=> select Total DNS Control and MX Records
=> select Add New CNAME Record
=> enter (dev) as Alias Name
=> enter (domain.com) as Host Name

Create Staging Files:

=> copy live file directory to dev
=> run cp -R store.domain.com dev.domain.com

Create Staging Database:

=> create new Dev database
=> dump Production database
=> mysqldump –opt –user=liveuser –pass=livepass livedbname > livedbname.sql
=> load Staging database
=> mysql -u devuser -p devdbname < livedbname.sql

Setup Virtual Host in Apache:

=> locate conf file (ie httpd.conf, vhosts.conf)
=> create VirtualHost entry for dev.domain.com
=> locate apachectl
=> run ./apachectl configtest
=> run ./apachectl restart

Sync Staging Site DB Credentials:

=> editapp/etc/local.xml
=> edit lines
=> edit lines
=> edit lines

Sync Staging Site Database Settings:

=> login to MySQL dev database
=> find config to edit
=> SELECT * FROM `core_config_data` WHERE `path` LIKE ‘%base_url%’;
=> update path web/unsecure/base_url
=> update path web/secure/base_url

Cleanup Staging Site:

=> rm -rf downloader/pearlib/cache/* downloader/pearlib/download/*
=> rm -rf var/cache/* var/session/*

It might take a while to shake out the cache, but that should basically get you a Magento staging server — a snapshot of your live Magento site.

** Note: I pulled my hair out for hours trying to figure out why the dev url was not printing correctly. It just seemed that whatever I did the system wouldn’t pick up the new base_urls. What I did was restart apache which I’m assuming cleared cache and allowed for the update base_url to be picked up. Also, make sure var directory is writable.

A number of their steps rely on the most recent version of WordPress. Getting up-to-date is never a bad thing, so it’s well worth doing.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

This article focuses on defending the administration area of WordPress, meaning all those pages in the wp-admin folder (or http://www.yourblog.com/wp-admin/) that are displayed after a user a verified. We bolded the phrase “after a user is verified” deliberately: it should be explicitly understood that only a simple query stands in the way of an evil hacker and the powerful admin area of your whole blog. The latter is only as strong as the passwords that are generated.

To make an attack more difficult, you should perform the following actions manually. These solutions do not guarantee 100% security, but you can create effective stumbling blocks on a hacker’s way to the administration area.
